America was the name given to the entire continent, I have already seen two Americans here recognize that it is wrong for one country to have the name of its continent! Update: The name of the Federative Republic of Brazil is Brazil if it is su

Answers:

I do not see any reason why the USA should change its name. When many countries change their name it is often a change from a name imposed by a former colonial power to a new name at independence that is the name the inhabitants want their country to be called.

The "United States of America" is the official name, though you will notice people and news reports and American politicians saying "America" - so in a way the name has already unofficially changed. It is more than "several" countries which have changed their names and/or borders if you look back more than about 300 years, it is almost all parts of the world!

Indeed across history many parts of the world have had many names, and borders etc have changed greatly. Less than 30 years ago 19 countries have been newly defined and named in Europe or just beyond its edges. Indeed in hat period the border of Europe itself has moved about 100 miles northward in the Caucasus Mountains.

When the United States of America came into being, it was envisioned to be more like the European Union than a country unto itself. Should the European Union have to change its name, too?

I agree with the other answers. America IS NOT the name of this country. It is United States of America

and America is NOT the name of the continent, it is North America.

you are batting zero out of two.

What about Australia and Antarctica?

The entire continent is called "North America", and the country is the "United States of America" therefore, the country and continent are not the same name. It is the same as the idea as this: let's say there is a continent called The Congo, and in that continent is a country called The Republic of the Congo. Surely there will be people who shorten this to "The Republic", like how people say "the states" or "the congo" like how people say "america". While the country and continent do not have the same name, people tend to shorten and abbriviate things to make their lives easier. I don't think that the United States should change its name because people don't realize that there is a difference between country and continent. There is also no law saying that "it is wrong" to have a country with the same name as the continent, it is just confusing.

But, most people from North America who are not from the U.S (i.e, Mexico and Canada), would tell you their country or origin, most likely not the continent, so I don't think you have to worry about being unsure whether people are from the US or North America

"it is wrong for one country to have the name of its continent!" Go tell that to Australia, ok?

By the way, the name of the continent to which you refer is "North America" and the name of the country is "The United States of America". If you think those two things are the same, you're either completely ignorant or just dumb as a box of rocks.

The name is an accurate description of the country. We are the United States of (the continent of North) America.

Similarly, South Africa is an accurate name for that country - it is in the Southern part of the continent of Africa and the Central African Republic is a Republic in the center of the continent of Africa.

The name is the United States Of America. Just because lazy or ignorant people like to call the country something else doesn't mean a damn thing!
