Why do people still believe in the story of Adam and Eve?

I mean come on, it's a complete contradiction. 'God', perceived to omniscient, omnipotent and be omnibenevolent, would have known, in theory, before he created the world, that the humans would disobey him and eat from the forbidden apple tree.

Answers:

I don't believe the story, myself, but I imagine that the story of Adam and Eve is supposed to highlight that humans have free will to do whatever stupid or noble things that we want to do.

Because they are smarter than you.

Of course it is true. God is a lot smarter than you.

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

John 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

There's no curing stupidity.

You really ARE this Scripturally ignorant, aren’t you!

I guess you must love showing it!

Mankind was created by God out of love and by His will alone. We were created to worship and glorify our creator, and love our fellow man. But God wanted this to be our choice. And He would separate the sheep from the goats on the last day.

The plan was to institute true love and freewill. Of course God knew the reactions of His creation. It was all part of His plan

I suspect there are very few who are dumb enough to take the story literally.

They had to change their tune there, as that story was so completely debunked.
So now it is a metaphor, parable, or some such.
They have to keep changing god's words, as science prove them wrong.
God's gaps are ever shrinking,

Many no longer believe it is literal as in the past.

They now conveniently avoid its silliness by claiming it an allegory.

In the far future, if people still believe in it, most of the bible will be reduced to metaphor, parable, allegory, allusion, expression and figure of speech.
